Exciting and dramatic images don’t often happen by accident. In this new series called Timeline, I will share with you how careful planning can help create some very interesting and dramatic wedding images. These images were taken at the I’on Creek Club in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The reception began at about 6:00 PM. First dances, meals being served and lots of conversation took up the first hour. I knew from working at this venue before that the sun would set behind the club on the marsh setting up some potentially stunning sunset images. So I gave my bride and groom the heads up. They knew that when the sun got lower in the west I would need to take them outside. I also knew that I only had about 15 minutes with this dramatic lighting. So I kept my eye out and even used another couple to see where to position my bride and groom when they arrived.
When the timing was right I took my couple outside and was all set to get the images I had planned in my mind’s eye. We were looking for high contrast, silhouettes, sun flares and strong shapes to make these images pop.
Scouting your location, alerting the bride and groom and having a planned timetable makes these type of images a real joy to produce.
